Introduction to The Proceedings

The Fifth North American Conference on The Family and Corrections was held at the Natcher Conference Center, at the National Institutes of Health, September 15-16, 1998 in Bethesda, Maryland. A special pre-conference workshop, Race, Culture and Language: Working with Children and Families of Offenders, was offered September 14. The conference theme was "Investing in the Child, the Family and the Community."

Over 225 participants attended from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel and New Zealand. Scholarship assistance valued at over $12,000 enabled conference attendance by 32 low income ex-offenders and family-of-offender members. The conference key note speaker was Patrice Gaines, author of Laughing in the Dark: From Colored Girl to Woman of Color—A Journey from Prison to Power and reporter for the Washington Post.

These proceedings highlight some of the presentations from the conference, including the conference keynote address by Patrice Gaines, who shared her journey "from prison to power." It is a remarkable story. We hope these materials give a flavor of the richness and depth of the many excellent presentations at the Fifth North American Conference on The Family and Corrections.
