F.A.T.H.E.R. - a curriculum developed for the North Carolina Department of Correction

The F.A.T.H.E.R. (Fathers Acting to Heal, Educate, and Reconnect) course curriculum was developed at the request of the North Carolina Department of Correction by Motheread, Inc., with extensive input from inmate fathers, NCDOC staff, and an experienced professional advisory committee. The lessons were designed to be used by a highly diverse group of inmate fathers across the State of North Carolina - from young fathers to older fathers -- expectant fathers to those who have grown children -- those going home soon to those incarcerated for years --those with frequent contact with their children to those who rarely see their children. Given this diversity, the curriculum is guided by universal themes and by activities that encourage and enable fathers to reconnect with their children.

Topics include Understanding Children's Reactions to Incarceration, Communicating from a Distance, Understanding Parent and Child Development, and Building Self-Esteem.

For more information about the availability of the curriculum and training on its use, contact Nancye Gaj, president of Motheread, Inc. at 919-781-2088 or motheread@earthlink.net.
